It may have been awhile since you've had that feeling, but there's no reason you can't tap into that back-to-school energy and enjoy that same giddy anticipation of good things to come. Let's start! You might be a different size this yearRemember how you could have grown out of your clothes in one year’s time? Your parents may have had no choice but to buy you new clothes because you had gone through a growth spurt. So, I’m asking you now, have you had a growth spurt? Has that waistline changed? Is it bigger or smaller? Are your shirts or blouses pulling at the front closures or are they too baggy? Are jackets too tight to button? Face the figure facts and get ready to make some adjustments. Maybe a favorite fall pant needs to be let out or taken in. The only way you’ll know is if you try your fall clothes on and see how they fit this year. Give yourself an hour or two to review what you’ve got and see what needs alterations, replacing, or repairing.Finding your uniformSome schools had uniforms or dress codes and many people look at that period of their lives with fondness. There were rules and with rules, it was easy to know what to do. You can have a uniform too—by choice—if you want to feel that security again. You don’t need to look at fashion and feel overwhelmed by all the choices. Just pick what fits your needs the best. Do you love wearing classic straight leg pants? Maybe they are part of your uniform. What other parts do you need? How about well fitting shirts/blouses, tops, sweaters, or jackets, and accessories (like ties, scarves, shoes, handbag/wallet, watch, jewelry) for polish? One savvy woman wears great fitting pants and v-neck cashmere sweaters with pointy-toed heels, over and over, day after day, and always looks great. It’s her signature style or her uniform. One savvy man wears great fitting trousers, a custom fit shirt, a fine leather belt and beautifully shined cap toe shoes and always looks fabulous. It’s his signature style or uniform. Making the decision to have your version of a uniform and then being consistently dressed that way can create a feeling of trustworthiness from those around you—your co-workers, family and friends.Maybe you have signature jewelry pieces that remain the same no matter what you’re wearing. Many smart people engage in this practice. For a woman, you can express part of your personality in a cluster of pearls and charms or maybe an ethnic combination of beads. Maybe you favor a pendant with a greenish gemstone that completely relates to your eye color and brings attention to your eyes. Add earrings that work well with it, a watch that relates to the predominant metal in your other pieces and you have a group that you can put with most of your outfits. And it works. Simply. For a man, you can express part of your personality with the most important accessory, your watch. If you wear suits, your ties are critically important. Have a stable of them relating to your eye color or reds that compliments your skin tone and hair color. A well-chosen tie draws attention to the communication center…your face. Be proud to be an upperclassmanEmbrace your seniority. You’re not a freshman anymore. More is expected of you now so look for quality in the items you choose to wear. Juicy Couture velour may be perfect for your little sister but try incorporating a more sophisticated look that others will look up to. Dockers may be perfect for the new college graduate but move to fine wool trousers for a more refined look. Step up on the quality of your basics. Lower end cotton shirts look tired after one or two washings, shrink and pucker. A high-quality cotton shirt looks handsome whether you’re dressing it up or down and it always fits you well.If you need help with your Back-to-Style-Wardrobe, please give me a call.
